Downtown for Democracy was established in 2003 with the objective of engaging America’s creative community in the democratic process. While creative people shape and influence culture, many of us were absent from the political process. We wanted to change that. Downtown for Democracy transformed our community’s cultural influence into political power: money, visibility, and votes and raised significant funds through events, art and merchandise sales. During the months leading up to the 2004 presidential election, we “spent” these assets to educate, register, and mobilize voters and to support candidates committed to individual liberty, social justice and democracy.
Downtown for Democracy members relaunched the group in May 2017—to rally progressives to combat the Trump administration’s destructive and anti-democratic agenda—and put the power of art and creative expression to work for democracy.
